The Residential Tenancies Act (the RTA) came into effect on January 31, 2007. The RTA sets the rules for most residential rental housing in Ontario.
The previous legislation, known as the Tenant Protection Act, (TPA) is no longer in effect.
The Landlord and Tenant Board’s role is to provide information about the RTA and to resolve disputes between most residential landlords and tenants. The
Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal is now known as the Landlord and Tenant Board.
You can call the Landlord and Tenant Board (the Board) at 416-645-8080 from within the Toronto calling area, or toll-free at 1-888-332-3234 from outside
Toronto, and speak to one of their Customer Service Representatives.
